Hi Jonathon:
I am speaking with Joan in Lyons Brook as I write and she has told me of your phone call and your run in memory of your mother. We are so proud of you and what you envision. Joan says 'If anyone can do it, it would be Jonathon'.
Looking forward to seeing you when you pass through Pictou, Toney River and we will be in Amherst to welcome you.

Today I will attempt to run twice in the same day, 30 minutes each time, to get used to running on tired legs. If I do this a few times a week, along with long runs of up to 20-25km on the weekends, I am hopeful that will be the basis of hat is needed to complete the trail in a short period of time. Good thing it rarely snows in Belgium!

Jonathan,

Wow, this is awesome! This is a great way to remember your mother and help others at the same time. One of my classes did a fundraiser for the palliative care unit when it first opened, I took the students over for a tour of the facility along with Dr. Farrell and his staff. The students had no idea what this place was all about. It really is an amazing place and I am glad to see your mom had a peaceful spot to spend her last days with you.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck in training for this selfless task and I know how proud Sharon would be!!!
I will be sending a pledge.

Cheers,

Andrew

Good for you Jonathan for redirecting the pain of personal loss to such a wonderful cause. An email from your friends this morning drew your site to my attention, with a request for a link on one of my sites in support. I am happy to do so.

On a personal note, we experienced similar family loss characterized by the all-too-familiar trips to Halifax for chemotherapy, radiation, bone scans, IVs and endless oncology consultations. Unlike your family, our loss concluded at home by choice but the many angels that drove the palliative service were fully involved nonetheless. Theirs is a special calling, deserving of our unselfish support.

Your example serves as a model for the rest of us who all too often think about such a response, but never find the time or motivation to follow through. No doubt community response will be generous.

Please let me know if there is anything you need respecting transportation, logistics, etc. I'll be cheering for you along "The Trail" when you pass. Good luck for a good run.

Overall placings 1.Rinaldo Nocentini 39hrs 11mins 04secs 2. Alberto Contador + 6secs 3. Lance Armstrong + 8secs
And news of next year! Tour 2010 starts in Rotterdam – stage 1 on 3rd July time trials – stage 2 July 4th Rotterdam to Antwerp!

(gerry, too, for that matter..what a gentle soul!) as a child, i found sharon truly exotic. she was unlike any of the other mothers i knew. i see her in your cottage kitchen, barefoot and brown as a berry, with a cocktail in one hand and a cigarette in another. i hoped i would be able to visit her when i returned to n.s. for dad's 70th birthday celebration (oct 2009)but it was not in the stars. my loss. she was a true bohemian, and there are NOT enough of us in this world. a wonderful and giving woman, the world is a lesser place for her passing. i believe your parents know what you are doing, and are very very proud of their children. blessings, natalie

Jonathan,
I missed you on your run from Pictou as I didn't know the exact time. I wish I could have joined you for a leg.

I was thinking about you during the past few hot days while out on my runs as well.
Just wanted to say way to go, and all the best in the days ahead. Your mom would be very proud of you for what you are doing and I know she's looking down with a smile and giving you strength. Many people are inspired by what you are doing, and for such a great cause!
Great job!
Mike

OK so here is the latest sports report for those in the nether regions! England won the second test, NZ beat the Ozzies, Contador is looking set to take yellow all the way in Le Tour and mardy pants Hushovd, after throwing his toys out his pram looks set for green! Most important of all Team Young with the arrival of Dr Dirk looks set for a triumphant finish of the Sunrise Trail - keep on trucking buddy - can you hear us cheering from Belgoland? PS Brendan shook hands with Princess Mathilde yesterday (National Day here) and immediately turned round and said in a loud voice 'How's she?' - priceless!

Hello All!

We are back on line after three days in Tidnish by the sea! Day 9 was a slow go but got the job done. Thursday's rest day was spent icing a very sore right shin but today's day 10 from Wallace to Port Phllips was a success and confidence is restored that a completion of the trail is indeed in sight! Dr. Dirk is on massage duty and his trusty assistant Jill has been cooking more than Jamie Oliver at a Xmas party! We are all at the lovely Wandlyn in Amherst until Sunday. Two days to go! Wish us luck and please give what you can to Palliative Care! See some of you Monday in Carvers.

Hello to all readers out there. My name is Dirk.
I am a friend and colleage of Jonathan in Waterloo, Belgium.
I was so impresed with his fabulous initiative to run the Sunrise trail to honor his mum,
that I travelled to Canada to support him to bring this mammoth job to a good end.
In this blog I will go through a day en route with Jon, day 9.
On day 9,
We are renting a small cottage in Tidnish from where we drive to the starting point of the run.
We get up at 6 a.m. to get the cool box ready, lots of water, energy drinks and bars, bananas and...sweet,sweet donuts...
Ice bags, a matress, spare clothing, a rain jacket and massage cream are already in the van.
At 6.30 we leave the cottage as we have an hour drive to the spot on the sunrise trail where Jon finished yesterday.
At 7.30 he starts his 23 K run of the day after taking lots of fluids and carbs on the way.
The first 10 K are done fairly easily in 55 minutes while we follow in the van.
We go ahead at some points, run back to meet him and keep him company for a few miles while trying to distract him as much as possible.
At the 12 K point, his right shin is starting to play up which forces him to slow down considerably. To keep him fired up,
we drive next to him while playing rock and roll music as loud as possible...
Now his left hamstring is thitening up as well, but he ignores the pain!
At the 15 K point he eats a banana, and a donut at the 18 K. Jill runs with him until kilometer 22 from where we get to the finish
point of the day to get everything ready: matress on the ground next to the van, ice bags on the elevated legs, more energy drinks, water and food
readily available. He finished in 2h20 minutes and had to dig deep today...
After the treatment on the spot, it's back to the cottage where an Ice bath waits for him (he has to put a belt in between his teeth to support the cold)
From now on, it's all about recovery and preparation for tomorow's run.
Relaxing on the sofa, legs elevated, covered with an electric blanket to keep the legs warm.In this position he eats his breakfast which we carefully prepared...
Eggs and bacon, toast, and lots of milk do the trick.
After this, I give him his daily massage to drain the legs from the cummulated lactic acid.
The painful shin and hamstring are treated with Voltaren gel. After we alternate cold packs and hot epson salts baths.
While he has his afternoon nap, Jill and I do the daily shopping; pasta, fruits and salads for lunch, steak, patatoes, green salads, pasta salads, nuts and sweets for dinner.
After dinner, we relax while watching a dvd and put our athlete to bet at 9.
I'm sure he will be dreaming of the next 60Km that still separate him fom his finish...Fort Lawrence.

Jonathan,

So this is it....300 km later, you cross the finish line. I can only imagine the many emotions you will be feeling. For the days I was with your support team, I was moved by your strength and conviction to honor your mother. Your spirit throughout it all was nothing short of amazing as you approached each day with a 'can do' attitude. You are an excellent example to us all.

Early to bed...early to rise - not always easy as we realized. Your commitment was a true measure of perseverance. So many memories.....ice cold baths for painful muscles, the Sunrise Run banner, the 'Honk for Jon' sign, the red flag (albeit borrowed), the cases of water, the red horn, the unforgettable van ride, and of course..... all the material that kept us laughing.

Your effort serves as encouragement for anyone working to attain their goal. You are a true role model.

As Jill wrote, "My brother and I are most grateful for the care that our mother received and that is why we want to give back to the people and program that helped our family during the most trying period of our lives." Jonathan and Jill.... Mission Accomplished!

Love you,
Sharon

HI Jonathon,
Congratulations on your achievement! I saw you last Monday almost at the corner of the Three Brooks Rd on my way to work. I was almost past before I realized it was you and your 'entourage'! I did honk though!
I'm sure your Mom would be really proud of this accomplishment. I'll never forget going to your house in grade 3 for my first piano lessons from Sharon! She was a wonderful woman. Plan to see you at Carver's tomorrow.
